The Concept
The shape of the model has a sense of separation as it is constructed with different sizes of space around. All the parts are pointing at the centre which highlight the space in the middle. Since Hopper is interested in cinema, the model has large window, which shows the interior. Different parts of the model create screens to show what happen inside the model.
The concept sketches above give a more clear idea about the separation of different parts of the painting. through the design process, i tried to separate the painting according to different parts of it, such the bar, the building behind, the street and the dark and light difference. After this, i chose the shapes from the them and re-organized the shapes.
Research
The NightHawks (1942)
In this painting, it shows customer's sitting at the counter of an all-night diner. The shapes and diagonals are carefully constructed. The viewpoint is cinematic - from the sidewalk , as if the viewer were approaching the resturant. The diner's harsh electric light sets it appart from the dark light outside, enhancing the mood and subtle emothion.
Hopper himself said, "Nighthawks" has more to do with the possibility of predators in the night than with loneliness.
Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 - May 15, 1967)
He was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. He paid particular attention to geometrical design and the careful placement of human figure in proper balance with their environment. He was influence on the art and pop culture. Moreover, the effective use of light and shadow to create mood is the central to Hopper's methods. Bright sunlights, and the shadow it casts, also play symbolically powerful role in Hopper's painting. His use of light and shadow effects have compared to the cinematography of film.
